“This is not What God Intended”: Attitudes Toward Adoption by Same-sex Couples in Ecuador

IntroductionIn Ecuador, adoption is limited to heterosexual couples and information on attitudes toward same-sex who intend become parents following this pathway scarce. This study aimed identify the beliefs of a sample 319 cisgender people in Ecuador regarding children by explore reasons why they consider it appropriate or not for lesbian gay (LG) adopt children. MethodsBetween May October 2019, participants responded quantitative qualitative questions after reading vignette about couple interested adopting child. Participants were randomly presented with one out three versions based couples’ sexual orientation (L,G, heterosexual). Descriptive, correlational statistics analysis variance used conduct analyses. Qualitative responses analyzed using thematic content analysis.ResultsResults indicate favorability all general. However, showed highest concerns LG couples. answers existence nine types arguments explain their position favor against couples.ConclusionSome are problematic since rooted prejudiced ideas people’s superiority capacities create emotionally nurturing environments.Policy ImplicationsProviding parenting might be way achieving legislative changes that might, turn, promote social change providing legal platform achieve parenthood.
